It has been a whirlwind couple of weeks in the Wagner-VandenHeuvel household! Between graduation, school field trips, and a few out of town consulting jobs, we have barely had time to breathe.
Last night we celebrated the final event of the month – a combined open house and 18th Birthday celebration for our Norwegian daughter. We wanted to do something a little different from the usual “$25 ham sandwich,” my father-in-law’s term of endearment for the multitude of open houses and weddings this time of year.
We wanted our party to be fun, relaxed, and include something “All American.” I am no cook, so it also needed to be easy. And since I have been working my tail off in my garden, it needed to be outside where we could enjoy the blooming iris, late lilacs, and catmint.
Katrine fell in love with the popular fireside treat known as a S’More early in her stay with us, and we decided that a “S’Mores-gas-bord” would be the perfect mix of simplicity and fun. And there is no better place to tell stories and share memories than around a warm campfire.
I searched Pinterest for some great S’Mores “recipes”, and here is what I came up with:
And here is the Marshmallow inspired birthday cake. I used a devil’s food cake mix, layered it with graham cracker crumbs and marshmallow fluff, then frosted it with whipped frosting and topped with mini-marshmallows and Hershey bits.
It was a great time, and super easy. Everyone had a great time, and went home with some new ideas to spice up their S’More repertoire. And by the way, the All American was my favorite!
